I bid thee welcome to my page

My great esteemed followers, mutuals, and friends: welcome to my fandom of one of my all-time favorite plays by William Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet

Thou can call me Giulietta, it fills my heart with joy.

Also the fact that even in my age, I still dream of playing Juliet, I hope so someday.

If I can start from the very early days of how and when I started to love this play, let me take you back in time to 1996, when I was 9-years-old. I can recall the moment when I first saw the trailer for the modern version of Romeo + Juliet. The whole heart-ease beginning of two lovers entwining their hearts in one, making their love as legendary as it is known to this day, and then the turning point of a an ongoing war between their families from which eventually the sought-after peace came with a price with the tragic end of their only offsprings. The movie was forbidden to me to watch as I was still a child, but fate granted me as I was of an age to watch it, I finally did and by Aphrodite’s child, thou blinded menace, did thou shoot so well with thine arrow to my heart. Yes, I’m a poet.

Yet my youth was yet a stranger in the world, the play never came to my mind until I did find a copy of it at a library when I was in Junior High. I read the whole play in one sitting. How could I read Shakespeare at such a young age and with such a complex English is beyond me, but fate as always comes in different ways that might surprise us.

Also may I add that I experienced for the first time a crush, so Leo DiCaprio as Romeo was my first love:

By then, when I was 16-years-old, I read the play once more and analyze it. I don't mean to brag but… I was good, the teacher was impressed This time, I watched the 1968 version of the play… And then it dawned on me, to forever be a devoted fan of Romeo and Juliet.

These two hold my soul:

From then on, my life was filled with anything I can find and have, all about them. Reading retellings, essays; watching other adaptations from theatre to movies that I can rank from excellent to even not so good. I swear the 1964 version was a doozy and so bland, the 1982 theatre adaptation was a snooze fest, the 1978 was… Meh but why did Juliet never blinks? that’s just weird.

To answer these burning questions:

  • Do I love the play Romeo and Juliet? YES.
  • Do I want a relationship like theirs? NO. (I’m a realistic, I don’t want theirs nor any fictional couples’ relationship.)

Link of the retellings

Along the way, during an extensive research period I had many years ago, I was pleasantly surprised to discovered that the star-crossed lovers trope has been made way before Shakespeare.

(FUN FACT: THE EARLIEST KNOWN VERSION OF THE STAR-CROSSED LOVERS TROPE WAS FROM OVID’S BOOK “METAMORPOHOSES” WITH THE STORY OF PYRAMUS AND THISBE, WHO WERE ALSO MENTIONED IN ANOTHER SHAKESPEREAN PLAY “A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM.”)

A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING OF THEIR DEATHS

This fandom I’ve created is my pride and joy. So much so that I took the liberty of translating the play in my Mother Tongue (Spanish) as well as the previous works by the following authors:

  1. Masuccio Salernitano: Il Novellino (Novela XXXIII) ~COMPLETED~
  2. Luigi Da Porto: Storia di Giulietta e Romeo  ~COMPLETED~
  3. Matteo Bandello: Novelle-Novella IX  ~COMPLETED~
  4. William H. Painter: The Palace of Pleasure-Twenty-fifth Novel  ~IN PENDING…~
  5. Arthur Brooks: Poem Romeus and Juliet  ~IN PENDING…~

Though it does sound tempting to publish my translated works, I’m still unsure to do so, especially the one of Shakespeare’s. I translated this play as a distraction from a very difficult moment in my life, and after a terrible loss, it later became my therapy to cope with such a tragic event.

I also wrote a fanfic of them, if thou want to read it, let me know!!!

If thou hath anything thou wish to ask and know about the play, send me an ask and thou shall receive my reply immediately.

Random facts about Romeo and Juliet just cuz

  • Romeo was “in love” with Rosaline first-Most people know that, but in case you didn’t, now you know. Friar Lawrence admonishes him for forgetting about her so quickly
  • The play takes place over four-ish, maybe five days. They meet, the next day they get married and everyone dies, then the potion that “kills” Juliet lasts a little under two days, I think
  • Benvolio is the one who convinces Romeo to go to the dance which is the first domino to EVERYTHING. It’s where Romeo meets Juliet and why Tybalt wants to kill him. Act 3, Scene 1 is really the only time we see him as hesitant to fight with the Capulets
  • Benvolio is also the only “child” who lives.
  • Mercutio and Paris are related and Mercutio has a brother named Valentine who we don’t explicitly see.
  • Rosaline is also related to the Capulets. She’s a niece to the Capulets, I think on Lord Capulet’s side whereas Tybalt is explicitly stated to be Lady Capulet’s Brother’s Child
  • “Prince of Cats” is actually a reference to some other show or something that had a character named Tybalt who was the Prince of Cats

Anyway, I just wanted to infodump a little. If you have any fun facts, feel free to add :)

That moment you realize that “sycamore” is just a pun for “sick-amour” as in “sick-lover”. Realizing the melancholy state of Romeo’s heart for Rosaline.

Inspired by a poll in the Hamlet tag about the hair color of Horatio, I thought I’d ask for people’s favorite hair color combinations for the two most famous lovers in fiction.

These obviously aren’t the only possible combinations, but they’re as many as I was allowed to list, all taken from the various film versions, paintings, illustrations, or stage productions of the play.

This one is tough. I could’ve chose at least three listed here.
